CW: Rope, chains, slavery and freedom.
Black history did not start with slavery.
TLDR: A kinky photoshoot to remind us that we are more than just the shackled, and that it’s also fun to play too. Teach Black history in schools. Ethical interactions for black folks in BDSM.
Rope and chains. I have a bit of a complicated relationship with it for lots of reasons. One of the reasons is because it instantly takes me back to history class when I was a kid, and one of the few times we got to ‘see’ ourselves as Black people in History was when we were shown crude drawings of Black people tied up by their necks and ankles with rope and chains, being dragged off a boat. We were told,
“These are your ancestors, this is who you were.”
Really It felt like I was being told, this is who you still are.
Looking back at my education in school is a reminder that our histories beyond slavery have been overlooked and erased. Years later campaigns like ‘Black History did not start with slavery’ reminded us that our histories are great and worth celebrating.
@toyadelazy reminds us why this is so important, it’s because:
“you have to know who you are to know where you’re going”

I want Black kids and my children to know that our ancestors were so much more than just the shackled.
Oh yeah…and for those kink folx who landed here because of, well, the kink, interested in creating safer spaces and revolutionising the way Black folx are treated in porn, play and beyond check out Miss Bliss , Venus Cuffs, Jamila Dawson Kevin Patterson and Blak Syn who spoke so eloquently about this in Flip the Script. More on my musings after attending Flip the Script BDSM: Essential Lessons for All Kinky Folx, in my next post.
So yeah this photoshoot was a place for me to explore kink on my own, for myself, to remind us that as Black folx we are free and unshackled, and most importantly, to have fun
Be good. Be safe. Look after yourselves and your Black Pals
Play lots, because sometimes there’s nothing more empowering than claiming your own pleasure.
You’re Welcome.
